Bachelor/Bachelorette parties

What's the current trend with Bachelor/Bachelorette parties? Are they all out-of-town trips? Do the bridesmaids and groomsmen feel an obligation to attend? What's your thinking on this?

I have been wondering about this lately too... I have known several grooms-to-be who are going to Vegas for their bachelor parties. I think it can be a great idea and tons of fun, but I also think it is important for the groom or bride-to-be to consider the costs for others. I don't think there should be an expectation for others to pay the groom or bride-to-be's way. The expenses can add up quickly and it can be a lot to ask. However, it seems that this trend may be increasing due to the fact that most people tend not to all live in the same town anymore and with out of town attendants, Vegas or elsewhere may be a good neutral spot.

Thanks for your input, Golfgirl. From what you said it sounds like Vegas trips are an increasing trend. With weddings being so expensive it seems like a lot to ask of attendants...an added expense. I guess a big part of this is that the attendants are so far away now. TPL

Last night I attended a bridal shower that segued immediately into a bachelorette party. The original plan was for the girls to go from the restaurant where the shower was held to a nearby pub - within walking distance to avoid the need for anyone to drive. But since the pub's air conditioning was broken, everyone ended up going back to the hotel where most of the girls were staying - sort of a grown-up slumber party. I think this was a great solution!

Susan, that sounds like a great idea. I've also heard about having the girls meet after a fitting for the bridesmaids gowns. Both of these eliminate an added trip for the girls.
